Limited to an intimate group of just 12 like-minded travelers, this expedition blends high-end hacienda and boutique stays with hands-on mastery: cooking ancestral dishes with local families, observing generations-old crafts in hidden caves, and boarding the efficient rails of the new Mayan Train. We land at Villahermosa Airport, where our private team will meet us and transport us past the lowlands into the lush, emerald rainforest of Palenque. After settling into our gorgeous jungle lodge, we gather with our small group of fellow travelers and cultural experts for an intimate orientation and a delicious welcome dinner celebrating regional ingredients.

We enter the archeological zone of Palenque exactly as the gates open, catching the morning mist rising off the temples before the crowds arrive. Guided by a local expert, we will wander through this brilliant example of Maya architecture, learning about the brilliant rulers, intricate hieroglyphs, and advanced engineering that defined this jungle kingdom. We will also tour the site's newly remodeled museum. We head back to the lodge for a free afternoon to relax by the pool, walk the property trails, or enjoy lunch at our own pace. Tonight, our dinner is hosted at a favorite local hotspot known for authentic regional flavors.

Today, we embark on the Mayan Train, a comfortable and efficient modern transit system connecting the treasures of southeastern Mexico. We settle into a spacious, air-conditioned cabin for the scenic 5-hour ride as the dense Chiapas jungle opens up to the vibrant lowlands of Campeche. Upon arrival, our local partner will transfer us to a boutique hotel in the heart of the historic walled city of San Francisco de Campeche—a colorful, UNESCO-listed coastal city on the Gulf of Mexico. After a late lunch of fresh seafood or other regional specialties, our local guide will lead us past brilliant colonial facades and historic bastions, sharing gripping tales of the Caribbean pirates who once sailed these shores. We end our day with a light supper on your own or a sunset stroll along the coastal boardwalk.

We spend a tranquil morning exploring Edzná, a majestic Maya archaeological site deep in the Campeche valley. Renowned for its remarkable five-story main temple and advanced water-conveyance systems, it sits peacefully off the main tourist track, with any luck giving us the ruins entirely to ourselves. En route, we stop for an exclusive visit with a local family. They will guide us in the hand-assemby of our own traditional Pollo Pibil tamales, which are buried in an underground earth-oven (pib) to slow-cook while we tour the ruins. We return to savor our hot, earth-cooked creations for lunch. Back in Campeche city, we visit a hillside fort to explore the city's maritime defenses before a beautiful group dinner inside the historic walls.

We take to the road in our private Sprinter van, heading first to the village of Pomuch, globally famous for its unique Day of the Dead customs where families meticulously clean and display the bones of their ancestors in beautiful, embroidered boxes. We'll sample the town's famous wood-fired artisanal bread before driving to Becál. Here, we step into a subterranean limestone cave to meet master artisans who weave exquisite Jipijapa hats (Panama-style hats), utilizing the cave’s natural humidity to keep the palm fibers pliable. We'll have the chance to purchase a custom hat straight from the makers. From there, we transition into the Puuc region, checking into a historic Hacienda hotel steps from the ancient city of Uxmal. Dinner is enjoyed on-site amidst the soothing sounds of the jungle.

We beat the heat and crowds with an early morning entry into Uxmal, a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its stunning Puuc architectural style. Unlike other Maya regions, the builders here used cleanly cut geometric stone veneers over concrete cores, creating magnificent facades adorned with thousands of intricate lattice panels and stacked stone masks of Chaac, the elephant-nosed rain god. We will stand in awe before the towering, rounded Pyramid of the Magician and the grand Governor's Palace. After an insightful guided tour and free time to wander independently, we return to our Hacienda for lunch at our leisure and a dip in the pool. Mid-afternoon, we visit an interactive eco-museum dedicated to the deep history of chocolate and its profound cultural and spiritual importance in ancient Maya rituals. We’ll learn about traditional cultivation methods and sample raw, spiced cacao ourselves. We will gather for dinner at our hacienda.

We savor a traditional Yucatecan breakfast at our hacienda before heading east. Our midday stop is Izamal, an enchanting Pueblo Mágico painted entirely in a striking, uniform golden-yellow. Known as the "City of Three Cultures," it seamlessly blends ancient pyramids with colonial architecture. It features the monumental 16th-century Franciscan Convent of San Antonio de Padua, which boasts an open atrium second in size only to the Vatican. We are free to explore the cobblestone lanes and have lunch independently. We highly recommend seeking out traditional dishes like cochinita pibil, papadzules, or longaniza de Valladolid at the local restaurants or the municipal market. By mid-afternoon, we will arrive at our gorgeous, historic jungle hacienda nestled right against the archaeological boundaries of Chichén Itzá. Dinner is served tonight on the veranda to a beautiful symphony of the rainforest.

Chichén Itzá is one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World, but it can be overwhelmed by day-trippers from Cancun. We bypass the madness by entering the archaeological site right as the gates open. We'll witness the legendary El Castillo pyramid, the colossal Great Ball Court, and the Sacred Cenote in the quiet, cool morning light. We head back to our hacienda for a refreshing swim and lunch on the veranda before driving to Valladolid. On the way, we'll stop for a stroll through Uayma to admire its unique, intricately stuccoed 17th-century colonial church. After checking into our boutique hotel in Valladolid, we dine together as a group and walk down the romantic Calzada de los Frailes to catch the spectacular nightly video-mapping light show at the San Bernardino Convent.

Following breakfast, we will enjoy a private guided walking tour of Valladolid, including a visit to the breathtaking Casa de los Venados, a private hacienda housing the largest museum-quality collection of Mexican folk art in private hands. Afterward, we’ll gather at a traditional Maya restaurant for a hands-on culinary experience, where we'll learn to press and puff perfect corn tortillas over a scorching clay comal. For lunch, we’ll enjoy regional delicacies like poc chuc paired with our handmade tortillas. We’ll spend the afternoon cooling off at a pristine, carefully selected cenote—a breathtaking underground freshwater cavern framed by hanging tree roots, entirely free from the massive crowds of commercial tour buses. We return to the town center for a free evening to relax or catch the main cathedral's light show.

We will begin our final full day with a guided visit to the Museo de Ropa Étnica de México (MUREM). This remarkable space connects us directly to the living history of Mexico's indigenous cultures through its vibrant, beautifully preserved collection of traditional textiles, weaves, and handcrafted garments. Following our tour, you’ll enjoy an open afternoon for your own exploration—the perfect opportunity to wander the main plaza, tour local galleries, or purchase last-minute souvenirs. In the late afternoon, we depart for the grand finale of our journey: an evening swim and a private dinner inside a secluded, mystical cenote. We will be guided through the cavern system to learn about its fragile limestone ecosystem and its spiritual significance as the underworld entry point (Xibalba) for the ancient Maya. After a refreshing, exclusive swim in the cool waters, we will dry off for an unforgettable, private 3-course gourmet dinner lit by candles inside the cave chamber, concluding with a grounding blessing ceremony led by a local Maya shaman.
